CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

BEGINNER MINECRAFT GAME DESIGN (Grade K-1)

June 18 - June 29

Let’s pretend you’re alone in a mysterious new world, full of hidden dangers. You have only minutes to find food and shelter before darkness falls and the monsters come looking for you. What do you do? What we teach you might just save your life! Learn how to find resources; make a shelter; craft tools, armor, and weapons, and protect yourself from monsters. Campers also create their own adventure map as design, production, and test playing guide them.

Campers learn how to work as a team as they take on the real-world jobs of programmer, game designer, artist, and architect. There are two modes of the game. The scenario above describes the survival mode. There is also a creative mode where there are no monsters and you will be able to fly around and have unlimited resources to build amazing creations and buildings. What kind of adventure you choose will be up to you!

All campers are required to have a Minecraft™ account for this class. Purchase a standard account and desktop version of Minecraft™ ($26.95) at minecraft.net/store. Campers should bring their account login when they come to camp.

CSI (Grade 2-5)

June 18 - June 29

Campers will learn to become Crime Scene Investigators during actual crime scene setups! Campers will learn how law enforcement professionals solve crimes and meet real professional Crime Scene Investigators and K-9 Handlers.  You’ll use the tools used in the field to collect evidence. Campers will learn how a crime is actually solved and learn how Biology, Chemistry, and Physics play a major role in the investigation!

Sample Projects: Crime Scene Analysis, Blood and Fiber Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Entomology Fingerprinting,  Microscopy, and DNA Analysis!

 TECH MACHINES (Grade K-1)

July 2 - July 13*

NO CAMP JULY 4

This is the perfect camp for the 4 and 5-year-old LEGO builder, as we introduce science and design technology concepts using LEGO’s Early Simple Machines and Tech Machine Sets. Campers build fun and simple models such as see saw, rolling vehicle, spinning top, raft, and many more. By building these devices campers are exposed to the concept of simple machines such as levers, gears, and wheels and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy, and balance. For extra excitement we add Tech Vehicles where campers learn about machines, the tools used to work on machines, and their functions.

In addition: Campers will also be able to complete a small LEGO building project that they will be able to take home!

ADVANCED MINECRAFT GAME DESIGN (Grade 2-5)

July 2 - July 13*

NO CAMP JULY 4

Minecraft is a block-building sandbox game with no set rules, where you can build anything you can possibly imagine. Allowing players to build, explore, create, collaborate, and even survive, Minecraft has created a new type of gaming environment. For veteran gamers, this camp will assist your survival and creativity as you learn new strategies from the creators themselves.

This camp is for those campers that have already been playing Minecraft. Campers learn how to make modifications and use Redstone to expand their creative abilities.

All campers are required to have a Minecraft™ account for this class. Purchase a standard account and desktop version of Minecraft™ ($26.95) at minecraft.net/store. Campers should bring their account login when they come to camp.

 JR. CHEMIST (Grade K-1)

July 16 - July 27

It is time for Glues, Brews and Goos! From our stockpile of hundreds of recipes and formulas, we have chosen our top favorite chemistry activities. Campers will love digging into and examining the results of these crazy chemical concoctions!  Sample Projects: Blob Explosions, Funny Putty, Magic Bubble Paint, Make Your Own Chewing Gum.

In addition: Campers will create several other wacky, wild and crazy concoctions! Our Jr. Chemists will realize the importance of measurement and sequencing as they use a taco sauce creation to clean pennies and investigate candy chromatography.

 SPECIAL EFFECTS (Grade 2-5)

July 16 - July 27

This is the first camp ever offered by Club SciKidz and today remains a popular pillar in our program! Newly revised and more exciting than ever, campers learn the science behind Hollywood’s special effects. Activities will demonstrate concepts related to light, sound, visual perception, illusion, and model stage building.

One of the great features of this camp is that all campers will create (and take home!) a movie using techniques in Claymation and Stop-Motion Animation. Lessons include plot development, story boarding, set building, filming, and sound effects. Campers will also learn various special effects make-up techniques working with the same materials used by professional make-up artists. They will simulate cuts, bruises, artificial blood, and even old age. Is there a future movie director living in your house? This is a camp your child won’t want to miss!

We will provide each movie maker a 2GB Flash Drive to save and take home their movie project!
